What's in a Name?

The Serene One has been doing triathlons for about two years now. We've both found the general tri population to be a good one. People are friendly and help each other out. They are not, however, known for outstanding sensitivity.

The usual competitive divisions in a tri are:

- Pros
- Men (in various age groups)
- Women (in various age groups)
- Clydesdales (Men over 200 lbs)
- Athenas (Women over 150 lbs)

The Serene One thinks that "Clydesdale" is pretty lame. Especially when compared to Athena. He suggests Ares, to go with the Greek mythology theme. I am not particularly bothered by it. Guys tend to have better self esteem about these things. After all, his rugby friends go by nicknames like "Fatman" and "House."

However, I did raise my eyebrows at a new competitive division offered at an upcoming Malibu triathlon site this weekend: Thunderthighs (Men 185-199 lbs). The Serene One thinks men would gain 15 lbs just to get out of the Thunderthigh category.

MuddyBuddy, which is run in 2 person teams, has the 'Beast' division... combined weight over 400 lbs. Certainly more acceptable than 'Thunderthighs'.
