Chookooloonks often publishes stunning photos of flowers with a very dark or black background. She commented that she isn't shooting them in a studio--she shoots into the light. I've puzzled over that comment for years. Then, last night at dinner I looked at the flowers on the table and the setting sun was behind them and bam! I got it. In the background is my messy family room, but you wouldn't know it to look at this pic!
Next up: figuring where on the flower to actually focus ;)

If you stop down your aperture you may be able to get the whole flower in focus.
