More Gadget Lust

Blogher 08 has stoked the flames of my gadget lust. I was already thinking of the iPhone before I attended and now I have to add the Mac Air laptop to the list. Unexpectedly, I am finding myself looking at camera equipment as well.

I attended the conference's photography session taught by Me Ra Koh. She was very generous and shared a lot of information. If you go to her blog, you can see all the photos she showed us and a summary of her advice. She charges inspiring amounts of money for the weddings she shoots and even has a DVD for aspiring wedding photographers.

Because of tip 4 and tip 7, an external flash and another lens are now on my gadget wish list. Of course, my constant obsession about weight-to-benefit ratios may edit them off the wish list. I should probably stretch *my* capabilities with my camera as-is, first.

Contemplating iPhone too. I think I need to be able to define 'aperture' before I'm allowed new lenses.

I'm not really a tech-savvy person, so one thing I got out of Blogher was Picnik-- it's a photo editing program that does the same thing Photoshop does, but apparently, it's much easier to tweak a picture on Picnik than on Photoshop. Something for you to keep in mind once you get the nifty new lens on your wish list.

I think the picture of Cupcake looks pretty good, actually.

I prefer natural light to a flash, even an off-camera flash; but sometimes that's not a viable option. This is especially true if you're shooting an event (eg wedding, party, etc), where you often have little control over existing light.

An alternative to an off-camera flash is to build a diffuser for your existing flash.

Lady M- I am fearlessly (or foolishly) strolling through the amazon canon lenses as we speak. Ignorance is bliss.

Cynthia- I didn't know that was what Picnik was! I got one of their cards, but it was really vague. I didn't even bother to check it out. Now I will. Thanks!

Hi Horace - thanks. It's actually an ok photo, but the flash really takes away from how nice and dark her fur was. I too prefer natural light, but when you're shooting nocturnal animals you're out of luck! What's your favorite build-a-diffuser technique? One girl said she cuts the bottom off of a dish soap bottle and tapes it on.

I haven't tried this yet, but this looks like a cute do-it-yourself diffuser:
