La Cucaracha

Serene Jr. has a great little rattle that I'm employing as percussion when I sing to him. Copacabana has proven a level too high for me. I don't know the song well enough and the lyrics are a bear. Instead, I'm singing "La Cucaracha" to him. Did you know that the song is about a marijuana-smoking cockroach? I had no idea. Check it out:

La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque no tiene, porque le falta
Marijuana que fumar.

(The cockroach, the cockroach
Now he can't go traveling
Because he doesn't have, because he lacks
Marijuana to smoke.)

The "kids" version is to replace the last line with "Limonada que tomar," or "lemonade to drink.

I had no idea either, interesting to learn.

Actually I didn't know there were lyrics were beyond the first line. My mother only sang 'la cucaracha, la cucaracha, eenie meenie miney mo' over and over.

Likewise, recently learned the Alouette song is about plucking feathers off a bird. Oh well, gruesome image, catchy tune. At least RR won't learn French to translate that too soon.

Okay, I just looked Alouette up. That's pretty disturbing. The Serene One says that there is a rugby version of it too. Yikes.
