I'm not sure we're safer. I do know there are a few things we need to support or continue to support:
1) Student visas: We attract motivated and smart people that deepen our educational system while they're here getting a degree. When they return to their home countries, I can't imagine better advocates for America than people that have lived here and can debunk the rumors and lies. Note, I am not saying that we get sloppy about issuing visas. If the student wants to learn how to fly a plane and not land it, our system needs to be smart enough to say no.
2) Broadcast our own propaganda. Silence is not an answer. If there's a 24 hour pro-terrorism channel out there, we had better be funding an anti-terrorism, pro-democracy channel out there. Give listeners another option.
3) Cut back on oil consumption. If they don't have money, they can't buy bombs. Enough said.
4) Fight poverty and ignorance. Easier said than done. No idea how to do this on a regional level. I'm keeping an eye on the Gates Foundation, though I know their emphasis is on Africa, not the Middle East.
Of all the 9-11 articles that I've read, I'm still most touched by the one written by Meg Cabot. Yes, the woman famous for "The Princess Diaries" and other teen lit, has written a compelling narrative here.

Things that will affect the great picture (like the world ) get less comments than things like personal conveniences.
Since people won't switch religion easily, one will have to preach to them in their religion, quote their holy book on how to do good deeds.
