I was complaining to BiL over dim sum that we seem to have a knack for killing rare, cool sea-going creatures. Japanese researchers got some incredible footage of the giant squid earlier this year, but accidentally killed it in the process.
The first birth of a manta ray in captivity happened in June. The baby was 1.9 M across. Whew! Luckily for the mom, the baby is born rolled up like a fruit roll-up. I found a video clip here. Sadly, it died a few days later.
I was lucky enough to see the baby grey whale JJ with my folks while it was at Sea World San Diego. It was incredible. Such a huge graceful creature. At least this time, there was a happy ending. They released JJ back into the wild without any mishap.
One of my long term goals is to get out to the new Georgia Aquarium. Apparently, they have whale sharks!!
