I was pretty disappointed earlier this evening with Lacey and Neil's Latin Jazz number. I don't think they made eye contact during the whole number. They also didn't radiate much emotion. Well, I think they were conserving it for their second number of the evening: choreographed by Mia Michaels to "Time" by Billy Porter.
I normally hate contemporary dance, but Mia Michaels has singlehandedly made it exciting to me. Last season, I was completed arrested by the group number she choreographed to Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek." She's also got an Emmy nomination for the park bench number she did for Travis and Heidi last year to Celine Dion's "Calling You." (The obsession of Wikipedia updaters is amazing).
To be honest, I'm not sure tonight's number was really dancing. More skipping, running, emoting than dancing. But it was beautiful. Very touching. It's all about redefining an art form. For once, a reality show worth watching!

What a number, there were tears in most of the audiences and judges.
I agree with you on all points, I think. I never started liking contemporary (or even being particularly aware of it) until some of the great Mia Michaels stuff last year. Though unfortunately nothing this year has quite measured up for me. This most recent one was good, but I wonder how differently people would have judged the dancing had they not known of the story behind the choreography.
Graham, I agree. The back story was important. Doubt most viewers would have been teary without it. I don't really mind though. Sometimes art needs subtitles.
Example: The song "Because You Loved Me" didn't make sense to me until I found out that Diane Warren wrote it originally to thank her father for his support and encouragement.
This is one of the shows I've actually missed since my tv was taken....I've always found it highly entertaining!
