Diet Coke and Mentos

I'm a huge fan of Mythbusters, a TV show that seeks to confirm or bust myths through scientific experiment. Questions like: "Can listening to classical music make plants grow better?" or "Can a cell phone really take down a passenger plane?"

The show is based here in the San Francisco Bay Area. It would be so fun to work for them!! One of the things I learned on the show is that immersing a Mento in a 2 liter soda bottle creates spectacular geyser effects. I have big plans to try this myself. Diet Coke is supposedly better because it isn't sticky.

I don't think I will ever get to this level of experimentation though:

That video was really fun to watch.
Especially the swinging bottles of coke.

I think it should work with soda water too (a lot cleaner, as it's just bicarbonate of soda, water and CO2). But they are more expensive than diet coke as they don't go on sale.

I think my husband and labmates actually tried this. They clearly have too much time on their hands.

Bob: Now I have to go try both and compare!

Brenda: This sort of stuff is inevitable when there is a critical mass of engineers and time. :)
