"The Middleman," despite its title, is a TV show about a young woman. The ABC Family show is a sci-fi/comedy/action show about Wendy Watson (played by Natalie Morales), an art grad student who saves the world in her spare time. She's apprenticed to "The Middleman" hero played by Brian Kessler and backed by a secret organization complete with headquarters, robots and tech gadgets.
The show just finished its first season this past Monday with the episode "The Palindrome Reversal Palindrome." I'm feeling bereft. "The Middleman" is fabulously written and Morales and Kessler have spot-on delivery. Every episode is packed with pop culture references lovingly documented by show creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach in The Middle Blog.
Highlights of the series: a cursed tuba that will cause listeners to drown in the icy waters of the Atlantic when played, flying zombie fish and a intergalactic invading force masquerading as a boy band. My favorite moment: when a possessed vampire puppet flees the scene by turning into a bat puppet and flying away with the puppeteer still attached.
Sadly, it's unlikely that the show will be renewed for another season. It's a little quirkier than the normal fare offered on ABC Family. Hopefully it will be shopped around to other networks.
