Reality Judging

A few weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly offered some ways to jazz up American Idol. Among them: devise a graceful exit for judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. The former, because her comments are the same for every contestant ("you're beautiful, you're wonderful") and the latter because he rotates between a set of 3 or 4 comments. I agree. When I watch the show, I fast forward to hear Simon's comments. Though sometimes a bit mean, he gives specific and candid feedback.

My favorite judges (and the only ones that The Serene One can stand) are on Dancing with the Stars. They each give valid and concise criticism. They get along with each other and with Tom Bergeron. They take notes, have rules to mark against and provide a numerical score. Note: Not sure why they deducted points for lifts but not for props.

Bruno and Len also have great soundbites. I wonder if they spend their spare time floating around a pool thinking them up.

Len said that Mario's sometimes loose styling reminds him of:
Britney Spears getting out of a car: Not very elegant, you sometimes see odd things you'd rather not…

Bruno Tonnioli's praise of Priscilla Presley's rumba:
Sensual, but not trashy. Available, but reassuringly expensive.

Len on Jason Taylor's Jive:
The lines were good, and I liked all the tricks. The bit I didn't like was the rest of it. It had no Jive action. One week you're a rooster, the next week you're a feather duster. That's life.

Len on Priscilla Presley's Tango:
He came at you, you moved away. He came at you again, don't touch what you can't afford sunshine. But no he came on, you gave him a quick flicker and on with the dance. Passion! Drama! Fire and ice!

Sniff. Another season draws to a close. Can't wait until next time!
