A Greener Nordstrom

Those of you who know of my Green Cult membership with Little K have probably heard me talk about Nordstrom and how they have been missing a big opportunity by not putting out Nordstrom branded reusable bags. Guess what!! Nordstrom has risen to the occasion:

Unfortunately, only available on the west coast right now. Can't wait to see them in person. Hopefully they are functional.

They're also switching over their gift boxes so they will be fully recyclable, as well as their paper tote bags. See this post from Sustainable is Good for more details. Yay!!

My one complaint about this "re-useable tote" bandwagon is the cost. Most of them are just swag bags that stores are selling with their logo for $1-$5 (and in Nordstrom's case $21). I generally ask for paper since that's what we use in our recycling can, or bring a swag bag I got at some conference or other that sits in my trunk for that purpose.

Here's a recycling question for you...Mr. 1950s gripes at me when I put the shredded paper in the bin because it flies about, especially once the truck dumps it up and over. But putting it in a plastic garbage bag sort of defeats the solution, right?

My perspective is: anything to get people to go re-usable. Some people need a little encouragement with pretty bags. Let's face it, it's a pain to haul extra bags around.

Given that most of these bags are debuting in California (Trader Joe's new ones, Target, Nordy) I have a feeling that the entire US is going to take a long time to convert.

I reuse paper bags at the grocery store because I hate having to wash leaked groceries out of cloth bags. esp raw meat!

As for shredded paper: our waste people have begged everyone to put shredded paper into paper grocery bags. Maybe that will work for you?
