The Haka

The 2007 World Rugby Cup is underway in France. Due to the time change and the dearth of US television coverage, we've been following most of the cup on the web. Not terribly satisfying. Rugby is so much more interesting than American football. I definitely would not mind if ESPN swapped college ball coverage for the world cup.

Tomorrow, Samoa and Tonga will play for the first time in a world cup arena. Interestingly, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji all perform war chants at the beginning of their games. (Thank goodness for the web: I've found examples of all of them. Just follow the links) Up until recently, I was only aware of the New Zealand All Blacks and their "haka." The Serene One, eager to stoke my interest in all things rugby, even dug up this explanatory article on the teams' war chant history.

The best part is seeing the teams do a chant square off. Here's a clip of New Zealand vs. Tonga.

Of course, all this rugby web searching turned up some beautiful rugby plays. Enjoy this one:

Great Rugby play. The reasons Rugby and Soccer aren't popular (I always say) are 1. Not natural commercial time for sponsors. 2. No built in time for Instant Replays for people to enjoy.
