Subirachs in Spain

I'm an unabashed armchair traveler and so, of course, my folks shared photos they took on their trip to Spain. I was intrigued with this photo they took at the Montserrat monastery :

After poking around, I found out it is a contemporary sculpture by Josep Maria Subirachs. He is most famous for the sculptures he designed and created for Gaudi's Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona:

I actually like his concept sketches more:

I'll leave you with this fascinating work called Relief Saint-Georg-Theseus.

The woman pictured is the princess Ariadne. Overall photo and explanation of the work is at Subirachs' official site (which is really hard to use). I also found this blog post with another photo of the work and some other Subirachs photos. Love the name of the blog: Chronicles of an Academic Groupie!

I particularly like the Relief Saint-Georg-Theseus and the other pieces featured in the blog post of Academic Groupie. I lived in Spain for a few years in my late teens. The Catalan culture around Barcelona is quite different from the mainstream Spanish culture. I loved listening to their own versions of flamenco etc.

Hi Kimberley,

Someday, I will actually get to Spain. Look forward to checking out the differences in person!
