Cloud Gate

When I told Little K that I was heading to Chicago, she loaned me a map and told me to see The Bean. After I saw this photo, I was sold. Lady M (see her parallel post here) and I trekked out there and it was awesome:

The view from underneath. It made me slightly seasick:

According to wikipedia's article, British artist Anish Kapoor won a design contest with Cloud Gate (affectionately known as "The Bean.") At the time, people were skeptical that the design could actually be executed. It is:
Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It is 33 feet by 66 feet by 42 feet (10 m × 20 m × 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons (99.8 t; 98.2 long tons).
I found this great photo essay of The Bean under construction. Also in Millenium Park are two works by Frank Gehry:

Pritzker Pavilion

The pedestrian bridge. I love how it's all scaly like a dragon.

I've never seen an underside picture like that before! So cool.

On the Sunday after BlogHer, I went to a concert at the Pritzker Pavilion. Really nice.

Stainless Steel? All along, I thought it was a mylar balloon! Ha Ha!

Good Times and Chaos: Yeah, it was definitely a weird feeling too look at it from below. It's called an omphalos, a concave chamber that warps and multiplies reflections.

ljc: wow, beaut photos! The nighttime light are so dramatic.

Mayberry: Fun! I hope the sound was as good as the looks:)

Bob: Yeah, it made me think of Jeff Koons' balloon dog. Also in stainless steel.
